School
and Businesses
Safety
doesn’t end at home!
Even if you think you do not live
in a disaster-prone area, something
like a chemical tanker truck overturning
can prevent you and your students or
employees from getting to your facility.
Even if a flood doesn't put your business
or school under water, customers and
supplies may not be able to get to
you.
Power outages, brownouts or surges
can affect your daily operations. Many
disasters, like wind storms, tornadoes
and earthquakes, can strike quickly
and with little or no warning.

Educational Materials
The American Red Cross has educational
materials to assist teachers who would like their students to learn
more about disasters, preparedness,
and general safety. Click here to read

of Disaster” program.
School Projects
The Lakeland Chapter feels that community
service is beneficial and emotionally
rewarding for people of all ages. Local schools, scouting groups, and other
children’s
organizations can get involved just
as adult service groups can. Here are a few ideas for how your students
can get active, both
locally and globally, through Red
Cross programs:.
Comfort Kits
Comfort kits are individual bags of
personal care items that Red Cross disaster relief workers give to
people who have been affected by fires, floods, and other disasters.
These items contain essential items such as soap, shampoo, and a
washcloth.
Comfort kits are available in both Adult
and Child versions. Children’s
comfort kits omit a few unnecessary adult items and include a small
toy for the child. Many of the schools we’ve worked with have
enjoyed collecting the necessary items
for these comfort kits and assembling
them with the aid of their teachers and a Lakeland Chapter
representative.
Having children assemble comfort kits is a great way to teach them
about disasters, recovery, and the tremendous positive power of giving
to others. Children take great pride in putting together a kit that
they know will go to help another child in our area. This activity
is relatively simple and is appropriate for any age group.

Presentations
Are you interested in helping your
employees or students learn more about
disaster planning and preparedness?
The Lakeland Chapter is able to send
representatives to your place of business
to give high-quality, informative presentations.
A presentation
can be custom-made for you based
on the audience size,
age of attendees, topics you request,
and the length of time you make available
to one of our experienced speakers.
Presentations may be formal or discussion-based,
according to your needs. We would appreciate
a minimum of three weeks’ advance
notice so we can prepare the best presentation
possible for your group.
Not sure
what you’d like the
Red Cross to address with your group?
Call us at 920-468-8535 or send an
email. We’ll be happy to help
you select relevant and helpful topics.
To give you a few ideas, some of the
topics we most commonly address include
tornado safety, fire prevention, severe
winter weather, terrorism, Red Cross
disaster relief, and general disaster
planning and prevention tips.
Businesses will benefit by learning
how to better prepare for natural and
man-made disasters in the workplace.
Many companies elect to have a speaker
discuss home safety, as well.
Schools can help their students by
providing them with an entertaining
way to learn more about severe weather
and safety.
The Red Cross will also give presentations
for community groups who want information
about disaster planning and preparedness.
All Red Cross presentations are given
free of charge.
