DOOR COUNTY TRANSPORTATION

February, 2002 is when the transportation program began in Door County to meet a need in the community for specialized transportation. The need is apparent by the increased number of clients registered within the program each year. In FY 2008 3,138 rides were provided to 609 clients. The number of clients doubled from 2007.

Our door-to-door service provides rides throughout Door County and provides trips to Green Bay. Northern Door clients are served by an American Red Cross vehicle housed at Scandanavia in Sister Bay.

As of April 2004 the American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter in Door County transport’s veterans to their medical appointments at VA clinics in Green Bay, Appleton, Milwaukee, and Cleveland, WI. For questions on how to sign up for the VA service or to use the transportation service within Door County please call 920-746-2167 for more information.

In order to provide this service, all drivers volunteer their time. For more information about volunteer driving opportunities or to schedule a ride in Door County call 920-746-2167 or e-mail doortrans@arclakeland.org

WHO QUALIFIES

Individuals 60 years of age or older and/or any individual with a disability qualify for the transportation service. If the individual is under the age of 60, a physician certification form is required before using the service. This form is available on the website or contact the Door County office at 920-746-2167 for a form to be mailed or faxed.

HOW TO REGISTER

You can register by calling the Door County Branch office at 920-746-2167. In order to receive a ride, basic information must be available to get you registered.

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth
  • Emergency contact name and phone number.
  • Please also state if you are ambulatory (able to walk and/or with use of cane, walker) or in a wheelchair, this will help determine what type of vehicle you will need for transportation.

The client certification form is available online for you to print off and mail in or call 920-746-2167 to have this form mailed or faxed to you.

In order to schedule a ride you must be registered with us prior to use. A 24-hour notice is required to schedule a ride, however for medical rides you can call weeks or months in advance, for social trips a week ahead of time. Please have name, destination address and time you want to be picked up for your appointment prior to calling, this makes the process much faster for everyone.

We require a 2-hour notification to cancel a ride, if the client fails to call in advance, or is not at their scheduled destination when the driver arrives, this is considered a “no show”. There is a $5.00 charge for each “no show”.

For most return rides home, if you do not have a scheduled pick up time, a call into the office when you are completely finished with your appointment is required. If you have specific questions regarding any of this information, please contact the Door County Transportation Office Coordinator at 920-746-2167 or stop by our office located inside the Sunshine House Inc., at 55 W. Yew St., Sturgeon Bay.
