YOUTH COURSES

The American Red Cross offers preparedness and safety courses for youth of all ages. Whether your child is 8 years old and you want to introduce them to basic safety and first aid information, or they are 11 years old and want to begin babysitting, the American Red Cross has the courses for your child's interests.

Basic Aid Training (BAT)
Course Content: Designed to introduce children ages 8-12 to safety information and first aid procedures for breathing difficulties, bleeding, poisoning, burns, shock, and other emergencies.  Participants will also learn how to keep safe by the water, when riding their bicycle, and develop a safety and rescue plan.
Certificate Received: Basic Aid Training with no validity.

Babysitter’s Training
Provides skills needed to be the BEST!!!

The Babysitter’s Training course is filled with fun and interactive activities.  With the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course, youth 11-15 years of age will gain the knowledge and confidence to be a great babysitter by caring for infants through school age children.

With the six primary areas, the participants will learn:

  • You're the Boss: A Guide to Leadership - The fundamental leadership skills necessary for safe and effective babysitting such as role modeling, respect, communicating decision making, and taking action.
  • The Business of Babysitting - All the basics on the business of babysitting including assessing your skills, finding work, creating a résumé, figuring out how much to charge, interviewing and professional behavior.
  • Safe and Sound on the Job - Extensive coverage of safety issues related to babysitting, including safe play, telephone and personal safety, preventing emergencies inside and outside the home, fire safety, rural safety and safety in the kitchen.  This section also provides tips for preventing common injuries and illnesses as well as preparing for weather emergencies.
  • Understanding Kids from 0 to 10 - Childhood development and behavior stages including information on how to select developmentally-appropriate activities, guide children in a safe and effective play, encourage positive behavior, appropriately correct misbehavior and handle common behavioral challenges.
  • From Feeding to Bedtime:  Caring for Kids - All the essentials of basic child care: safe techniques for holding, carrying, feeding and diapering, dressing and bathing children and infants, as well as bedtime routine and personal hygiene.
  • It’s an Emergency…Now What? - How to care for first aid emergencies that babysitters are likely to encounter, such as bee stings, allergic reactions, asthma and burns.  Participants also learn the following skills: conscious check- child and infant, unconscious check- child, conscious choking- child and infant, rescue breathing- child and infant, and controlling external bleeding.  This section also includes information on how to build your own babysitting kit.

Audience:
Youth ages 11-15
Course Content: See information above.  Child and Infant CPR and First Aid can be taken as an addition to the basic babysitting class based on the availability of classes offered.
Prerequisite: Recommended minimum age of 11
Certificate Received: Babysitter's Training (no expiration date).

Child & Infant CPR + First Aid for Babysitters
Audience:
Youth ages 12 - 15
Course Content: Prepares babysitters to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in children and infants.  Also gives babysitters the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical helps arrives at the lay responder level.
Prerequisite: Must have taken the American Red Cross Babysitters Training class and must be 12 years old.
Certification Received: Child & Infant CPR- valid for one year and First Aid- valid for three years
